About Eccleshall Parish Council

Eccleshall Parish Council, established in 1894,  is one of the largest Parishes in Staffordshire with some 20,000 acres and 133 public Rights of Way.

The Parish Council is a non-political body comprising of 15 councillors, representing the four wards of Eccleshall, Croxton, Horsley, and Slindon.

The Council is supported by a professionally qualified Clerk, who holds both the Certificate in Local Council Administration and the Higher Education Certificate in Community Governance.

How We Work

The main Council meetings are supported by six active committees:

Councillors are encouraged to take part in committee work, attend training, and contribute to the upkeep and assessment of Council-owned property.

Council meetings are held monthly on the third Wednesday, except in August and December. The Planning Committee meets on the first and third Wednesday of each month, with other committees meeting every 2–3 months. All meetings are open to the public, and upcoming dates can be found on our website calendar.

Supporting our Community

Eccleshall Parish Council plays an active role in enhancing local life. It supports the Ecclian Society by financing the watering of the posts and mangers in the summer months and purchasing of the Christmas trees, and organises the popular Carols around the Christmas Tree event. A Civic Service is held each year in the Autumn and the Council is represented at the Remembrance Day Parade. It hosts the annual Community Showcase, where local groups and organisations come together to highlight their activities and connect with residents.  Our Events Committee delivers other one-off celebrations, including Jubilee and Coronation events, and the memorable VE Day celebration.

Managing Local Spaces

The Council maintains a number of open spaces and public assets, including:

  • Jubilee Playing Field (Hartlands Road)
  • Elford Heath
  • Croxton Play Area
  • Land off the Eyeswell footpath
  • Beech Road Community Park

It also owns and looks after benches, bus shelters, noticeboards, three restored phone boxes, and is active in maintaining Public Rights of Way, acting on concerns raised by the volunteer footpath marshall team.

A team of litterpicking volunteers support our KETT (Keep Eccleshall Tidy) initiative.

Eccleshall Community Centre and Allotments are also owned by the Parish Council, although both are run by separate Associations.

Eccleshall Parish Council has delivered a number of community projects over the years, including the creation of a picnic site at Copmere, refurbishment of the High Street, resurfacing of The Eyeswells Footpath, and installation of the Millennium Clock and Village Sign. A grant obtained from the Staffordshire Environmental Fund was used to install a Play Area at Croxton.

In recent years, the Council has delivered several more key improvements across the parish. These include the enhancement of Elford Heath pool and its surrounding area, the introduction of six mobile speed indication devices rotated across nine locations, and the installation of outdoor gym equipment near the Community Centre and at the Jubilee Playing Field on Hartlands Road. The Council has also assumed long-term responsibility for Beech Road Community Park through a lease agreement with Stafford Borough Council.

Eccleshall Community Library

In 2024, the Council became the new partner of Staffordshire County Council for Eccleshall Community Library, ensuring its continued service following the handover from Eccleshall Mercia Rotary Club. The library is run day-to-day by a fantastic team of volunteers.

Further support is also given to local community organisations via a small grants scheme. Details regarding eligibility and the grant awarding application process can be found by clicking here
